THE MASTERPIECE OF NATURE
According to the ancient tales, Herzog Stjepan Vukčić Kosača began building the town of Ljubuški in honor of his wife Ljubuša. It is mentioned for the first time in written sources in 1435 as Lubussa, while it appears on maps under its present name in the latter half of the 19th century.

The Dubrovnik Archives holds records dated February 15, 1435, mentioning the Anthony of Padua Church and Monastery in Ljubuški. That monastery, located on the hill of Humac, is home to the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inspired by European museums, it was established in 1884 by Franciscans, led by Fra Anđelo Nuić. The museum houses the Humac Plate, a 12th century monument inscribed in a mixture of Glagolitic and Bosančica (Bosnian Cyrillic) scripts, while the museum library safeguards a treasure trove of 20,000 titles from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
The locals take pride in their cultural and historical heritage, as well as the gifts of Mother Nature, who was generous in these parts. After a tranquil course towards Studenci and Zvirići, the cliffs gave way, and the Trebižat River cascaded down the rocks, creating the Kravica Waterfall in a 120-meter-wide arc. This natural amphitheater, standing 30 meters tall and adorned with moss and lichen, shaded by chaste, fig, and populus trees, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in our country.

Thanks to lower water levels in the summer, it is possible to swim and enjoy water sports. However, be cautious as some sediment debris may fall down. Entry into this stone oasis is subject to a fee, and swimming for animals and making fires are prohibited.

The river that created this natural spectacle, traveling through limestone terrains and depositing sediment, is 51 kilometers long. It springs nine times along its course, changing names each time. Passing through different areas in our country and in Croatia, it is called Culuša, Ričina, Brina, Suvaja (Posušje), Matica, Vrljika (Imotski), Tihaljina, Mlade (Vitina), and finally, Trebižat (Ljubuški).
A canoe safari on this river is an experience you don’t want to miss. One of the offered tours starts right below the Kravica Waterfall. After a refreshing moment under the waterfall, you face one of the biggest adrenaline challenges on the Trebižat River — a descent down the Mala (Small) Kravica. Once your heart rate slows down, you can enjoy a calmer flow through untouched landscapes. You might spot a wild horse, a frog, a stork, or a heron. Just when the whisper of leaves, the chirping of birds, the sound of water, and the rhythmic paddle strokes lull you, Trebižat starts testing your reflexes and endurance once again with its rapids. Adrenaline junkies can experience the full force of this river with a solo descent down rapids as high as three meters.

In the town of Vitina, where the Trebižat is called Mlade, you’ll find the Koćuša waterfall, five meters high and fifty meters wide — yet another site that is worth a visit.
