UP THE FALCON'S PATH
A mountain adorned with endless coniferous forests, accentuated by predominantly vertical rocky cliffs soaring over 100 meters. A mountain where nature is harsh, and the climate is unforgiving — Romanija. Perhaps it’s precisely this harshness, true wilderness just a step away from civilization, that makes it so appealing. The most prominent relief feature in the municipalities of Pale and Sokolac is Crvene Stijene (the Red Rocks), now designated as a protected natural monument.

The Red Rocks are home to endemic plants, wildlife, and, of course, falcons, after which the via ferrata Sokolov put (Falcon’s Path) is named. It’s suitable for beginners, and the stunning panoramic view from the cliffs is reason enough to step outside one’s comfort zone. Two suspended bridges that take your breath away reveal the true meaning of the “bird’s-eye view”. Marked hiking trails through the pine forest, with well-maintained viewpoints, lead to this 350-meter-long via ferrata. The starting point is the Glasinac Mountain Lodge, where you can rent climbing equipment and arrange for a guide.

In the municipality of Pale, you can also find one of the most beautiful caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina — Orlovača. Featuring a plethora of cave decorations in diverse shapes and colors, this site has also revealed bones of a cave bear that are more than 16,000 years old. Today, it provides a refuge for one of the most endangered groups of mammals in Europe — microbats (Microchiroptera).
